Current status
Waikato Regional Council adopted the Hearings Panel Recommendation report at a council meeting on 25 September 2025 and Council’s decision was notified on 14 October 2025.
Anyone who made a submission or further submission on the Proposed Waikato Regional Coastal Plan has the opportunity to lodge an appeal with the Environment Court.
The Proposed Waikato Regional Coastal Plan was notified for public submissions on 18 August 2023, and submissions closed on 14 November 2023.
Hearings were held from February to April 2025.

Notification of decision - Proposed Waikato Regional Coastal Plan
The Council’s decision on the Proposed Waikato Regional Coastal Plan was notified on Tuesday 14 October 2025. Please find below, the public notice, the decision on provisions and the Hearings Panel Recommendation report, and further information on lodging an appeal.
Anyone who made a submission or further submission on the proposed plan can lodge an appeal with the Environment Court. The period for making appeals on the decision is 30 working days, commencing from 14 October 2025 .
When an appeal is lodged with the Environment Court, the appellant is required (within five working days) to serve a copy of the notice on every person who made a submission on those provisions to which the appeal relates. Submitter contact details are listed below.
You must also provide a copy of your appeal notice to Council.

Timeline of the review process
Development of the proposed coastal plan
Over the last five years, council has carried out a review of the Waikato Regional Coastal Plan to bring it into line with national and regional policy direction while ensuring it meets the needs of Waikato communities.
